The Iowa Thespian Festival is an annual event sponsored by the Iowa Educational Theatre Association, attended by over 1,000 theatre students and directors from across the state, filled with performances, auditions, and workshops. You do not have to be a Thespian to attend State Thespian Festival!

The 2020 Iowa Thespian Festival will be held this Spring as a series of Regional Events due to Covid-19.  More information will be available soon.

WHY SHOULD I ATTEND FESTIVAL?
REASON # 1: WATCH GREAT PERFORMANCES FROM ACROSS THE STATE OF IOWA
At Festival, you will have the opportunity to watch mainstage productions, as well as a number of one act plays and smaller performances. This is a great way for you to experience the work that other high school theatre departments are doing across the state of Iowa. Mainstage at Festival has featured a number of memorable shows including Pippin, Time Stands Still, and [title of show]. Studio Theatre performances are produced by a number of high schools and offer a wide variety of entertainment options. Iowa Festival is a unique opportunity to enjoy and learn from performances that you won’t want to miss!

REASON #2: YOU COULD ALSO PERFORM AND COMPETE IN THEATRE EVENTS
At State Thespian Festival, students may compete in theatrical competition known as Individual Events. Events include a variety of acting, musical theatre, design, and technical events. Students competing in Individual Events have an opportunity to perform for adjudicators and delegates at Festival for the opportunity to qualify to perform at the International Thespian Festival! Select students and groups will also have the chance to perform for all delegates in the Individual Event Showcase. This is a great opportunity to gain experience and receive feedback in the theatre area of your choice. If you are interested in acting, singing, improvisation, or even film, there is an opportunity for you!

REASON #3: AUDITION FOR THE CHANCE TO RECEIVE COLLEGE AND THESPIAN SCHOLARSHIPS
Seniors interested in pursuing a career in theatre - performance, technical, or theatre education - have the opportunity to meet and talk with college representatives during scholarship auditions. In addition, you can audition for scholarship money, including three incredible scholarships from Iowa Thespians. No matter what, the audition process will help you prepare for a future career in theatre!

REASON #4: ATTEND WORKSHOPS LED BY TALENTED THEATRE ARTISTS
If you are interested in acting, there will be workshops for you! If you are interested in singing, there will be workshops for you! If you are interested in improv or dancing or stage combat or hair and makeup or lighting, there will be workshops for you! Most workshops will get you actively involved and learning lots of interesting things about whatever area of theatre that interests you!

REASON #5: HANG OUT WITH HUNDREDS OF HIGH SCHOOL THEATRE STUDENTS
State Thespian Festival is a great way to bond with your fellow students – not just from your own school, but from across the state of Iowa. There is no other experience quite like spending a weekend meeting and creating new friendships with theatre-loving students just like you!
