Iowa Thespian All-State Cabaret

The All-State Cabaret is an exciting event that will conclude our weekend at Festival, featuring performers and technicians from across the state in large and small ensemble musical performances that fit into our Festival theme, Time Warp. Participants will learn from and work with a creative team of directors and designers from across the state to create the performance during festival.

Each school attending Festival has the opportunity to submit TWO performers from their school - ONE performer for the treble choir (soprano/alto/mezzo) AND ONE performer for the bass choir (tenor/bass/baritone). Our goal is for ALL schools to be represented by a performer. Each school may also submit the name of one technician to apply for 4-6 design/technician roles. The creative team will distribute sheet music to all performers, which will need to be memorized before festival weekend.

Rehearsals will be on Friday and Saturday of Festival. Performers selected for the All-State Cabaret may only participate in one other Festival event (these events include Individual Events, Studio Theatre performances, Tech Challenge).

Performance attire for the Cabaret is professional blacks (same guidelines as Individual Events). Questions? Contact Aaron Dean (adean@dbqschools.org).

2019 All-State Cabaret Creative Team
Director - Aaron Dean (Dubuque Senior)
Music Director - Katie Galliart (University of Dubuque)
Choreographer - Steph DeLacy (Davenport Junior Theatre)

Performer Guidelines
  • There is NO audition. Each school may have two representatives in the performance - ONE performer for the treble choir (soprano/alto/mezzo) AND ONE performer for the bass choir (tenor/bass/baritone)
  • Performers will need to be available for rehearsals on Friday and Saturday afternoon at Festival
  • Students performing in the cabaret may only participate in ONE other performance opportunity at festival in order to ensure availability for rehearsals. Performance opportunities listed below...
    • Individual Events
    • Tech Challenge
    • Studio Theatre performance
    • State Thespian Officer Candidate
  • Student leadership lunch and scholarship auditions do NOT count towards your one other performance opportunity.
  • Rehearsal times on Friday afternoon will be staggered in order for performers to participate in ONE other performance opportunity at Festival.
  • Cabaret performers will miss workshop opportunities during their tech rehearsal on Saturday afternoon
  • Mainstage performers may not participate in the All-State Cabaret. Schools presenting a mainstage at festival are asked to select a student not involved onstage for the All-State Cabaret.
  • Current State Thespian Officers may not participate in the Cabaret due to their Festival obligations.
  • Performers will need to memorize music BEFORE the weekend of festival.
  • A detailed rehearsal schedule will be released along with the music in October.
  • If you have questions about any of the above details, contact Aaron Dean, at adean@dbqschools.org.

Performer Video Submission
All performers will need to submit a video for the creative team to prepare students for the cabaret. There is no audition for the cabaret - troupe directors may select any student that they would like to participate. The video will help the creative team place students into vocal parts and solos.

Performers will need to select one of the following songs to sing in the video. If you are unsure of your vocal part, you can choose whichever song fits you best. Click on the link below for the sheet music with the video cut.
  • Sopranos - Seasons of Love Solo #1
  • Altos - Welcome to the Sixties
  • Tenors - You'll Be Back
  • Basses - Seasons of Love Solo #2
The song may be sung without accompaniment. Videos do not need to be recorded with professional camera equipment -  a cell phone works fine.

Performers have two submission options -
1. Upload a video file in the form below.
2. Share a link to a video player (i.e. YouTube) in the provided box below. Be sure if you are submitting a link that the permissions are set for creative staff members to access the link.

If you have any questions about the video submission, contact Steph DeLacy at stephanie.delacy@gmail.com.

Technician Guidelines

    • Sound Design/Sound Board Operators
